So I guess everyone has come across these black and white squires in their every day lives, but what do they mean?

Well these things are not alien messages or terrorist code, they are a simple advertising tool. This is how it works.

Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR Codes are now used in a much broader context, including both commercial tracking applications and convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users (known as mobile tagging).

QR Codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards, or on just about any object that users might need information about. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader application can scan the image of the QR Code to display text, contact information, connect to a wireless network, or open a web page in the phone’s browser. This act of linking from physical world objects is known as a hardlink or physical world hyperlinks. Google’s mobile Android operating system supports the use of QR codes by natively including the barcode scanner (ZXing) on some models and the browser supports URI redirection, which allows QR Codes to send metadata to existing applications on the device.

So having said all that would you like to create your own message or link to a website?

Go toqrcode.kaywa.com enter the test you want and click generate this will give you a meta string and also a simple picture you can just save and put on your website.Structure of a QR code, highlighting functional elements.

With anti-piracy outfits and dubious law-firms policing BitTorrent swarms at an increasing rate, many BitTorrent users are looking for ways to hide their identities from the outside world. Here’s an overview of five widely used privacy services.

The services discussed in this post range from totally free to costing several dollars a month. The general rule is that free services are generally slower or have other restrictions, while paid ones can get you the same speeds as your regular connection would.

VPN (paid / free)

Hundreds and thousands of BitTorrent users have already discovered that a VPN is a good way to ensure privacy while using BitTorrent. For a few dollars a month VPNs route all your traffic through their servers, hiding your IP address from the public. Some VPNs also offer a free plan, but these are significantly slower and not really suited for more demanding BitTorrent users.

Unlike the other services listed in this article, VPNs are not limited to just BitTorrent traffic, they will also conceal the source of all the other traffic on your connection too. Ipredator, Itshidden and StrongVPN are popular among BitTorrent users, but a Google search should find dozens more. It is recommended to ask beforehand if BitTorrent traffic is permitted on the service of your choice.

BTGuard (paid)

BTGuard is a proxy service that hides the IP-addresses of its users from the public. The service works on Windows, Mac, Linux and as the name already suggests, it is set up specifically with BitTorrent users in mind. Besides using the pre-configured client, users can also set up their own client to work with BTGuard. It works with all clients that support “Socks V5″ proxies including uTorrent and Vuze. In addition, BTGuard also includes encryption tunnel software for the real security purists.

After these words of praise we’re obligated to disclose that BTGuard is operated by friends of TorrentFreak, but we think that should be interpreted as a recommendation.

TorrentPrivacy (paid)

Torrentprivacy is another proxy service for BitTorrent users, very similar to that of BTGuard. It offers a modified uTorrent client that has all the necessary settings pre-configured. The downside to this approach is that it is limited to users on Windows platforms. TorrentPrivacy is operated by the TorrentReactor.net team and has been in business for more than two years.

Anomos (free)

“Anomos is a pseudonymous, encrypted multi-peer-to-peer file distribution protocol. It is based on the peer/tracker concept of BitTorrent in combination with an onion routing anonymization layer, with the added benefit of end-to-end encryption,” is how the Anomos team describes its project.

Anomos is one of the few free multi-platform solutions for BitTorrent users to hide their IP-addresses. The downside is that it’s not fully compatible with regular torrent files as Anomos uses its own atorrent format. Another drawback is that the download speeds are generally lower than regular BitTorrent transfers.

On the uTorrent Idea Bank, more than 1,600 people have asked for the Anomos protocol to be built into a future uTorrent build, making it the second most-popular suggestion overall.

Seedbox (paid)

A seedbox is BitTorrent jargon for a dedicated high-speed server, used exclusively for torrent transfers. With a seedbox users generally get very high download speeds while their IP-addresses are not shared with the public. Once a download is finished users can download the files to their PC through a fast http connection. FileShareFreak periodically reviews several good seedbox providers.

It’s been a while since my last post mainly due to laziness but with a little bit of computer trouble aiding my lack of updates.  My laptop doesn’t like Windows XP & my Vista disc is scratched beyond all repair so the Ubuntu 10.4 disc I made for a nerdy/rainy day made the cut.  Starcraft II released shortly before the great hard drive failure so I played it on Windows for a while & fed my addiction for the game.  I wasn’t about to give up on playing so I set forth on getting Starcraft II to work on my new operation system & here is a little tutorial on how I got it to play:

Cedega is dead for the most part & Crossover Games costs money so I gave Wine & PlayOnLinux/Wine a try.  I’ll provide the way to install the game simply using Wine a try first:

How to Run Starcraft II With Wine 1.2

  1. Download & Install Wine 1.2 (In my case I use Ubuntu w/ installation via Synaptic Package Manager)
  2. Open a command line / terminal window & type the commands listed below
  3. cd ~/Downloads
  4. wget http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/winetricks
  5. chmod +x winetricks
  6. ./winetricks droid fontfix fontsmooth-rgb gdiplus gecko
  7. ./winetricks vcrun2008 vcrun2005 allfonts d3dx9 win7
  8. winecfg

The winecfg command will open the Wine configuration.  You will notice tabs along the top with one titled Libraries.  The Libraries tab will list a war load of libraries.  What we went to do is add mmdevapi to the overrides then edit/disable it.  After mmdevapi is added & disabled click on the audio tab and choose Alsa.

With any luck at this point you should be able to play Starcraft II on Linux.

How to Run Starcraft 2 With PlayOnLinux

PlayOnLinux is the easiest option since it will automate the process of installing SC2 via Wine (for the most part).  Use these steps to get the game up and running:

  1. Download PlayOnLinux for your specific Linux distribution (If you use Ubuntu download the newest version via the official website to get the newest version)
  2. Click on install & select Starcraft II from the Games menu
  3. Go through the step by step process (note if you install from the DVD it will take a long time for PlayOnLinux to copy the files from the disc, don’t be alarmed)
  4. When the game is installed select it & click on “configure this application” from the menu.  You’ll want to choose “configure wine” and add then disable mmdevapi in the libraries tab like we did with the Wine howto.
  5. Play SC2 – Wings of Liberty (hopefully)

Potential solutions for FPS issues:

Starcraft II will likely run slower on Linux than Windows for various reason but you might be able to compensate using these methods:

Google is building a Chrome OS tablet. It’s real, and it’s being built by HTC. No surprise there, since HTC churned out the Nexus One for Google.

Yes, they plan to offer it in conjunction with Verizon, which probably doesn’t come as a shock to anybody at this point. The two recently tag-teamed that Net Neutrality proposal and they’ve had plenty of discussions in the past about cooperating in some capacity.

As for the launch date of November 26th. You can bet Google’s Chrome OS tablet will be heavily subsidized, and I’d go so far as to say it will be substantially cheaper than the iPad if not totally free with a Verizon data contract.

So what will the Google tablet pack for hardware? While our source didn’t provide any specifics, my guess is that the device could be based on NVidia’s Tegra 2 platform and sport a 1280×720 multitouch display, 2GB of RAM, minimum 32GB SSD, WiFi/Bluetooth/LTE connectivity, GPS, webcam, and possibly expandable storage via a multi-card reader. Again, these were not given to us by our source, but expect it to be every bit as geek-tastic as the Nexus One — Google won’t want to disappoint its early adopters.

There are a nearly infinite number of reasons to rip your DVD collection to more compressed, more compatible formats. Whether you want to use your Apple TV or Xbox 360 as a video jukebox with nigh-instant access to all your favorite flicks, protect your precious discs from the peanut buttery hands of your toddlers, or you just want to watch Pee Wee’s Big Adventure on your iPhone, ripping DVDs is easy and takes about a half hour—assuming you have a relatively modern computer with a multi-core CPU. Want to know more? We’ll show you exactly how to rip DVDs for playback on all your devices—Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iPhone, iPod, Zune, laptop, netbook, and PSP—the fast and easy way.

The big benefit to ripping your DVDs is that you can shrink the 4-8GB MPEG2 videos on your DVDs to much more compressed file without reducing the quality noticeably. The secret is the H.264 video codec, alternately called MPEG-4 Part 10 or simply AVC. H.264 can compress DVD-resolution video with no reduction in quality at less than half the bitrate of MPEG2. The upshot is that the video that takes up 7GB on your DVD will take 1GB-2GB or less on your iPhone or on your streaming server.

It’s worth mentioning that bypassing the copy protection mechanisms that are present on most DVDs is illegal in the US under the DMCA, but there are questions about the legality of the no breaking copy protection portion of the law, and there’s been no legal challenge to that portion of the law. The upshot to a normal person who just wants to rip discs for personal use it that it’s very unlikely that you’ll be caught and prosecuted for ripping discs, unless you do something dumb, like post your ripped videos on the Internet. As long as you don’t distribute the ripped movies, everything should be cool.

If you’ve ever forgotten your password or been asked to assist somebody else in resetting their password, there’s a lot of different ways to accomplish it. Here’s how to do it by hacking the Sticky Keys feature.

Over at the 4sysops blog, they’ve written up the process of resetting your Windows password by booting off a repair disk, opening a command prompt, and copying cmd.exe over top of sethc.exe. Once you’ve done that, you can boot back up into Windows until you get to the login prompt, press the Shift key 5 times, and you’ll see a command prompt where you can use the net user command to reset the password.

If the system already has the Sticky Keys feature disabled, or you don’t feel like copying files around, you can use an Ubuntu Live CD to reset your Windows password instead.

“Hey can I charge my iPod on your laptop for a few minutes? Hey thanks man, have a free USB stick, a friend gave it to me and I already have a ton of these things, oh check out the photo he put on there it’s hillarious!”

iPod Sneakiness

Bruce Schneier discusses an article recently published in the Spring issue of 2600 titled “iPod Sneakiness” where the author mixes a combination of social engineering with an iPod running a *podslurping application. Imagine if you (or your employees) were at a Starbuck’s with your laptop and someone came up to you and innocently asked if they could plug their iPod into your computer to power it up. If that iPod has a podslurping application installed on that iPod they would be sucking more than power from your laptop, they would also be sucking down files and passwords from your system.

I used to work for a large public technology company that actually has a Starbucks on campus. Since the Starbucks is not company owned, anyone can sit in the coffee shop without security badges. The amount of potential information that could be compromised from an attack such as this is beyond comprehension, as engineers, IT staff and top level executives all visit this “hub” with their laptops.

Making a Trojan Clickalicious

In an further discussion of the Dark Reading article discussing a recent penetration test on a credit union, using USB sticks and a Trojan; it appears that Autorun was not used to run the application. Instead the application was masked as a JPEG image using Windows ability to mask extensions, and embed an icon into the executable, so the credit union employees thought they were opening an image, not executing an application.

*Podslurping is a term to describe where a portable storage device such as an iPod is used to illicitly download large quantities of data by directly plugging it in to a computer, where the data is held, or which is on the inside of a firewall where the data is held. As these storage devices get smaller and their storage capacity gets larger it is becoming an increasing security risk to companies and government agencies. Access is gained while the computer is unattended.
