A rather serious security flaw in the iPhone’s SMS messaging system has been discovered and revealed by well-known security researcher and jailbreak extraordinaire ‘pod2g’. Security flaw affecting all iPhones that he says could facilitate hackers or thieves to access your personal information.

The researcher claims that the flaw has actually been present in Apple’s iPhone software ever since the first iPhone was launched in 2007, but has failed to have been picked up on by anybody, including Apple it seems.

Researcher revealed an SMS spoofing flaw that affects every version of Apple’s mobile OS. Using the flaw, hackers could spoof their identities via text and send messages asking for private information (by pretending to be from a users’ bank, for example), or direct users to phishing sites.

Users would be under the impression they were replying to the sender displayed on the screen of their iPhone, when in fact the text would be routed through to a different number without their knowledge. Pod2g highlights several ways in which malicious parties could take advantage of this flaw, including phishing attempts linking users to sites collecting personal information or spoofing messages for the purposes of creating false evidence or gaining a recipient’s trust to enable further nefarious action.

“…In the text payload, a section called UDH (User Data Header) is optional but defines a lot of advanced features not all mobiles are compatible with. One of these options enables the user to change the reply address of the text. If the destination mobile is compatible with it, and if the receiver tries to answer the text, he will not respond to the original number, but to the specified one.”In many cases the malicious party would need to know the name and number of a trusted contact of the recipient in order for their efforts to be effective, but the phishing example shows how malicious parties could cast broad nets hoping to snare users by pretending to be a common bank or other institution.

In the meantime be prepared to update your iOS version as new options become available, as exploits are discovered Apple typically works quickly to fix those issues whenever possible.

Apple getting Sued Again

SEOUL, South Korea — A group of some 27,000 South Koreans is suing Apple for $26 million for what they claim are privacy violations from the collection of iPhone user location information.

Each person in the suit is seeking 1 million won ($932) in damages, Kim Hyeong-seok, one of their attorneys, said Wednesday. He said they are targeting Apple Inc. and its South Korean unit to “protect privacy” rights.

Apple spokesman Steve Park in Seoul declined to comment.

Apple has faced complaints and criticisms since it said in April that its iPhones were storing locations of nearby cellphone towers and Wi-Fi hot spots for up to a year. Such data can be used to create a rough map of the device owner’s movements.

Apple also revealed that a software bug caused iPhones to continue to send anonymous location data to the company’s servers even when location services on the device were turned off.

The company has said it will no longer store the data on phones for more than seven days, will encrypt the data and will stop backing up the files to user computers. It also has fixed the bug with a free software update.

Kim, the lawyer, took Apple to court earlier this year over iPhone privacy and was awarded 1 million won.

The Korea Communications Commission, South Korea’s communications regulator, earlier this month ordered Apple’s local operation to pay a 3 million won fine for what it said were violations of the country’s location information laws.

Oh Byoung-cheol, a professor of information technology law at Seoul’s Yonsei University law school, said that the KCC ruling is likely to bolster the plaintiffs’ allegations of illegality by Apple and that could have an impact on possible cases in other countries.

But any South Korean court decision on damages is unlikely to have much effect elsewhere given differences in international tort law, he said.

South Korean courts “tend to be stingy with damages for mental suffering,” he said.

If the court in the southern city of Changwon rules in favor of the plaintiffs, the total award could come to about 27.6 billion won ($25.7 million). Cupertino, California-based Apple — the most valuable company in the United States — earned $7.31 billion in its fiscal third quarter.

Kim said he expected the first hearing in the new case to take place in October or November.

Jung Ogk-taek, an official at the Changwon District Court, said it was not clear how much time would be needed to reach a verdict.

Kim said 26,691 plaintiffs were listed in the civil suit filed Wednesday. Another 921 are minors and lawyers need to obtain the consent of their parents before they can join, Kim said. He expects that to take about two weeks.

Lawyers are soliciting more participants between now and the end of this month to join the case.

While there’s no question that the iPhone experience can be greatly improved by a few choice accessories — a cool speaker dock and a snazzy case, for example — there are companies out there that have taken the concept to the extreme.

Here we take a light-hearted look at some totally unnecessary iPhone accessories that only the true gadget-addict would consider a good investment.

PCs lose to Smartphones

For the first time in history, mobile products have exceeded computer shipments.

According to a report by the Financial Times, manufacturers shipped more smartphones than personal computers in the fourth quarter of 2010. Over 100 million smartphones were distributed in the last three months of 2010, up 87-percent from the year prior. In contrast, PC shipments reached only 92 million units in the same timeframe, up 3-percent from 2009.

While certainly a noteworthy turn of events, the data should be taken with a grain of salt, and special consideration should be given to the high turnover of smartphone units. In other words, customers buy new smartphones more frequently than they do PCs, due to the lower costs and rapid evolution of mobile technology.

Nevertheless, we expect to see these sort of results become an ongoing trend as tablet devices and smartphones begin to edge out netbook and laptop sales.

CBS has just posted a new app to the Apple App Store that turns your iPhone into a Star Trek communicator. You can flip the communicator open by flipping the phone and it includes all sorts of Original Series sound effects. Even cooler there is a phone app included, which can access your contacts, so you can make calls right from the communicator.

Right now it’s a bit pricey at $1.99, but if you’re a hardcore Trekkie/Trekker with an iPhone and just can’t live without it; you can get it here.

If you’re running low on space and your favorite maintenance tool isn’t helping, you may find that iTunes is hogging a few gigs of your system in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes (or ~/Library/iTunes on a Mac). Just head in there, delete the backup folders, and watch your hard drive free up tons of space. If you are using Vista or Windows 7 the location is C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync

iOS: It’s been a long time coming, but finally Microsoft Office users can get their favorite note-taking app on the iPhone, so you can view, create, and sync notes on-the-go.

While OneNote is a pretty great note taking app (and one that many of you actually prefer), it’s biggest downside was that, unlike the popular Evernote, it wasn’t cross-platform. Microsoft took a big step in that direction, today, bringing OneNote to the iPhone. With it, you can get all your existing notes from the OneNote desktop app and webapp directly from the cloud, edit them, and even create new text, picture, bulleted, or checkbox notes right from your phone. It even saves them in the background as you type.

Microsoft OneNote is free for an as-yet-defined limited time, and works with iOS 4.2 or later. Microsoft OneNote 2010 is required to sync notes from the desktop app.

iPhone Costume?

John Savio and his gang including Reko Rivera and Bobby hartman have built iPhone costumes for the past two years. They as you can probably guess built the 3G and 3GS. This each played an endless loop of normal usage of the iPhone. This year John wanted to take things even further. He worked for 40 hours over a three day period and built a fully functional iPhone 4. This one uses a 40inch LCD panel strapped to a sandwich board. A Jailbroken iPhone 4 powers the device. Although the battery life is not as good. It is powered by  a mini 12 volt battery lasting only 2 hours. It weighs at 75 pounds. But all you can see is the fun and excitement, this boy may not be as happy as he seems. I mean the costume gets warm and uncomfortable after a while. Hopefully next year he’ll come up with an iPhone costume without the iPhone.

If anyone else sees people dressed up as iPhones this Halloween send in pictures to us and we will post these crazy peoples pictures on the site.
